Bentley is a gorgeous Spoodle owned by Sarah, one of our extraordinary Vet Nurses. Poor Bentley woke one morning with a very sore tummy and then had a vomit or two and some diarrhea. Bentley was very unwell and he was far from his usual bouncy self.
Sarah brought him straight into work, by which time he had developed blood in his poo. Dr Kelly Yeo examined him and ran some blood tests, which showed he was dehydrated and had some inflammation present. Bentley was placed on intravenous fluids and had injections of pain relief and an anti nausea drug. He responded very well to the medications and rehydration and was able to go home the next day.
Bentley had developed a syndrome we call HE (haemorrhagic gastroenteritis). This is often seen during Spring and Summer and we are not always sure what infectious agent causes the vomiting and diarrhea. Dogs can become very unwell with HE and some even require plasma transfusions as they lose so much blood into their gastrointestinal systems.
Fortunately Bentley responded well! It is also fortunate that Sarah has pet insurance for Bentley, and stands to get a good sum reimbursed from his illness. He is back to his usual crazy ways and we all love him!
