Dr Ele’s gorgeous labradoodle, Lucy, recently developed a life threatening condition known as immune-mediated thrombocytopaenia (IMTP). This is where the body starts destroying its own cells, in this case the cells Lucy needs to clot her blood properly, called platelets.
Unfortunately for Lucy this condition oftern occurs without a particular cause. Ele noticed that Lucy had developed a lot of bruises on her tummy and when she checked her platelet count via a blood test, it was very low.
Lucy was taken to the emergency centre in case she needed a blood transfusion overnight and fortunately, she did not. Lucy was started on medications to reduce the inflammation. She is now doing well and back to her scally wag ways. You may hear her if you come into the clinic, having a howl out the back.
